Warrick, Webster may avoid late cuts

By Mark Curnutte
Enquirer staff writer

NFL teams once cut a significant number of players after June 1.

Waiting until June 1 allowed teams to absorb remaining signing bonus values - though the money had been paid years earlier - on their salary caps in the current calendar year and the next.

The Bengals released quarterback Akili Smith on June 2, 2003, in order to absorb what remained of his $10.8 million signing bonus in 2004, as well.

These days, though, teams are more likely to release a player even before June 1 and take the salary-cap hit in full now instead of later. That group doesn't include the Washington Redskins, who were expected to cut three pricey, underachieving veterans to save some $4 million to help sign rookie draft picks.

The Bengals already have done some cutting, primarily letting go of veteran linebacker Kevin Hardy on April 3. That move saved the team the $2.6 million base salary he was due this coming season but left it to absorb $1.75 million of the $3.5 million signing bonus he received in April 2003.

The lack of activity in the Bengals' front office Wednesday means wide receiver Peter Warrick is expected to get the chance to play if he recovers from knee and shin injuries suffered in 2004, and linebacker Nate Webster probably will get the opportunity to show if he can come back from two operations to repair patellar tendon damage.

"It's all a matter of being healthy," Warrick said Wednesday.

Webster was typically optimistic, even after the Bengals invested their first two draft picks this year on linebackers David Pollack and Odell Thurman.

"It's a help for us," Webster said. "Everybody (at linebacker) had surgery last year except ... nobody."

The salary cap for players for the season per team is $85.5 million. The Bengals are believed to be $4.8 million under.

Chad Johnson says he won't hold out for more money

By Kevin Kelly
Enquirer staff writer

In response to a comment made by his agent in a recent online report, Chad Johnson stressed Wednesday that a holdout is not in his plans.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus represents the Bengals wide receiver, who is under contract through the 2009 season. An ESPN.com story about Rosenhaus included a comment from the agent that Johnson was "sorely underpaid."

"My agent doesn't run me. I run myself," Johnson said after Wednesday's workout. "He works for me. Therefore, if there were any holdout going on it would be going on right now with the rest of those that are holding out for more money right now.

"(Number) 85 ain't going nowhere."

In November 2003, the Bengals gave Johnson a $12.5 million signing bonus on a five-year contract extension worth $26 million. According to the NFL Players Association, his salary will rise from $1 million this season to $3.6 million by 2009.

"That's Drew's opinion," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "He's got that opinion about nine or 10, 12, 15 guys all around the league through this point. No big deal."

Johnson led the AFC in receiving yards (1,274) last season, caught a career-high 95 passes and was voted to the AFC Pro Bowl squad for the second consecutive year.

"Am I underpaid? I'm not sure," Johnson said.

FOR STARTERS: Linebackers David Pollack and Odell Thurman - the Bengals' top two draft picks - continue to make good first impressions.

"I think they're ahead of the game," Lewis said. "They're both guys that were very, very well coached at Georgia. ... It would surprise me if they're both not first-day starters."

LOOKING AHEAD: The team's final voluntary on-field session with the coaching staff is today. Mandatory minicamp is set for June 17-19.

Running back Chris Perry (sports hernia) has not been cleared to participate in minicamp. Linebackers Landon Johnson (shoulder) and Caleb Miller (ankle) along with wide receiver Peter Warrick (knee, shin) are questionable.

ODDS AND ENDS: Veteran center Jerry Fontenot did not receive a June 1 tender contract offer. Unless signed, he will remain a free agent after July 22. ... With their NFL Europe seasons finished, Casey Bramlet, Derrick Crawford and Greg Scott returned to Cincinnati this week.
